It’s been almost a year (May 17 2012) since counterculture icon and long time journalist Travus T. Hipp (Chandler Laughlin) passed. Once in a while I’m reminded why I spent 7 years, for two or more hours every weekday morning of that time, transcribing, elaborating on, and archiving his Cabale News Service news and commentary. So the rest of the world would have at least ONE entirely independent commentary on world affairs that illustrates not ALL Americans are psychopathic genocidal maniacs. He referred to himself as “The Poor Man’s Paul Harvey”. Poor, as in Proletariat but NOT ‘lumpen’. Poor as in speaking to an audience who understood we are “Impoverishing ourselves with genocide”. From his involvement in the anti-nuclear weapons movement of the early 1960s, to his hashish smuggling from Afghanistan and other places Westerners ought not visit idly today, his days as the “Dog” in Chet Helm’s “Family Dog” at the legendary Maritime Ballroom in San Francisco, to his direct involvement with the American Indian Movement on Alcatraz, before, and after, Chandler Laughlin WAS involved in the social issues he reported…Therefore, HE WAS NOT a ‘Reporter”, forbidden from taking sides on the issues he reported. He was a “Journalist”, in the most traditional sense of the word.

Here’s his commentary from this day last year:Defense Spending - Breaking Down The Abstraction Of Our Defense Budget’s HUGE Expenditures (May 9, 2012)

From 2011: ‘Disaster’, It May Be Our ‘Most Important Product’ - The ‘Disaster-Industrial Complex’ Means Jobs In America (May 9, 2011)

"As neighboring nations remain on guard for a missile launch or nuclear test that South Korean and U.S officials say could take place at any time, the focus north of the border is on planting rice, cabbage and soybeans. In hamlets all along the DMZ, soldiers were knee-deep in mud and water as they helped farmers with the spring planting"

In The News: It’s 420, April 20th, memorialized nationwide, perhaps globally, for a number of reasons (Columbine, the Waco siege on David Koresh’s Branch Davidians compound, the Oklahoma City bombing (on the 19th), and Adolph Hitler’s birthday) that have no direct connection to Marijuana.

Razer Ray needs to say a word or so here: Philosophically… If the industrialized members of the human race had been more involved consuming the noble herb and less involved with alcohol and nasty pharma-complex pills/potions that suppress free thought and free will over the last so many hundred years, no one would have thought David Koresh’s Branch Davidians weird for their beliefs, or worth harassing to the point of their own self-assisted destruction.

Nor would there have likely been disfranchised, disillusioned and abandoned soldiers from our dirty wars (wars that would have been soooo much less likely to have been fought in the first place) to have acted in a reactionary manner to that occurrence (The Oklahoma City bombing of the Murrah Federal Building).

No more stressed out, dunned and harassed ‘outcast’ students at a ‘human mind mill’ called ‘Columbine high school’ (or Virginia Tech for that matter), a ‘school’, like most public schools, thoroughly abusive in culture and intended to act as an institutional babysitter, making it possible for both parents, those children’s pilot guiding lights, to work themselves into psycho-emotional numbness, ruining them as parents to their own children, and allowing the school authorities to attempt shaping those ‘lost children’ into docile subservient workers with only the knowledge necessary to accomplish the task of making money and being good consumers, even as the consumer based society they were programmed to believe in was spiritually unfulfilling (nor intended to be otherwise) and indeed, even then, collapsing.

Think on it….

One thing I’ve noticed about the FBI and “Domestic Terrorism” ‘perpetrators’… Not only do they completely set up the ‘perps’, which IS what law enforcement has pretty much always done, but they go farther now and set the victims up for SPECIFIC CHARGES, typically Patriot Act laws they want to have a body of test cases for:

It may be that ol Dawg Dave PETraeus (snigger) had TWO women on the side:

The Washington Post reports that the investigation into CIA chief David Petraeus began “when a woman whom he was having an affair with sent threatening e-mails to another woman close to him,” citing “three senior law enforcement officials with knowledge of the episode” as sources. [In Full]

Suppose ol’ dawg Dave was a Black Rose S/M society member like Pentagon Nuke Inspector in Iraq “Jack” McGeorge, outed just before the invasion?

«o» There is only one news story today.

Chandler Laughlin III, Travus T. Hipp, passed away peacefully in his sleep last night.

The quintessential “Hippie” with a social activist heart of gold…

Rest in Peace Chan…

We never met but it was an absolute pleasure working with you.

From Wikipedia’s entry for the word “Hippie”:

In April 1963, Chandler A. Laughlin III, co-founder of the Cabale Creamery,[29] established a kind of tribal, family identity among approximately fifty people who attended a traditional, all-night Native American peyote ceremony in a rural setting. This ceremony combined a psychedelic experience with traditional Native American spiritual values; these people went on to sponsor a unique genre of musical expression and performance at the Red Dog Saloon in the isolated, old-time mining town of Virginia City, Nevada.[30]

During the summer of 1965, Laughlin recruited much of the original talent that led to a unique amalgam of traditional folk music and the developing psychedelic rock scene.[30] He and his cohorts created what became known as “The Red Dog Experience”, featuring previously unknown musical acts — Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Charlatans, and others — who played in the completely refurbished, intimate setting of Virginia City’s Red Dog Saloon. There was no clear delineation between “performers” and “audience” in “The Red Dog Experience”, during which music, psychedelic experimentation, a unique sense of personal style and Bill Ham’s first primitive light shows combined to create a new sense of community.[31]

Laughlin and George Hunter of the Charlatans were true “proto-hippies”, with their long hair, boots and outrageous clothing of 19th-century American (and Native American) heritage.[30] LSD manufacturer Owsley Stanley lived in Berkeley during 1965 and provided much of the LSD that became a seminal part of the “Red Dog Experience”, the early evolution of psychedelic rock and budding hippie culture. At the Red Dog Saloon, The Charlatans were the first psychedelic rock band to play live (albeit unintentionally) loaded on LSD.[32]

When they returned to San Francisco, Red Dog participants Luria Castell, Ellen Harman and Alton Kelley created a collective called “The Family Dog.”[30] Modeled on their Red Dog experiences, on October 16, 1965, the Family Dog hosted “A Tribute to Dr. Strange” at Longshoreman’s Hall.[33] Attended by approximately 1,000 of the Bay Area’s original “hippies”, this was San Francisco’s first psychedelic rock performance, costumed dance and light show, featuring Jefferson Airplane, The Great Society and The Marbles.[34]

Two other events followed before year’s end, one at California Hall and one at the Matrix.[30] After the first three Family Dog events, a much larger psychedelic event occurred at San Francisco’s Longshoreman’s Hall. Called “The Trips Festival”, it took place on January 21–January 23, 1966, and was organized by Stewart Brand, Ken Kesey, Owsley Stanley and others. Ten thousand people attended this sold-out event, with a thousand more turned away each night.[35] On Saturday January 22, the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company came on stage, and 6,000 people arrived to imbibe punch spiked with LSD and to witness one of the first fully developed light shows of the era.[36]

It is nothing new. We have a private revolution going on. A revolution of individuality and diversity that can only be private. Upon becoming a group movement, such a revolution ends up with imitators rather than participants…It is essentially a striving for realization of one’s relationship to life and other people… Bob Stubbs, “Unicorn Philosophy”[37]

By February 1966, the Family Dog became Family Dog Productions under organizer Chet Helms, promoting happenings at the Avalon Ballroom and the Fillmore Auditorium in initial cooperation with Bill Graham. The Avalon Ballroom, the Fillmore Auditorium and other venues provided settings where participants could partake of the full psychedelic music experience. Bill Ham, who had pioneered the original Red Dog light shows, perfected his art of liquid light projection, which combined light shows and film projection and became synonymous with the San Francisco ballroom experience.[30][38] The sense of style and costume that began at the Red Dog Saloon flourished when San Francisco’s Fox Theater went out of business and hippies bought up its costume stock, reveling in the freedom to dress up for weekly musical performances at their favorite ballrooms. As San Francisco Chronicle music columnist Ralph J. Gleason put it, “They danced all night long, orgiastic, spontaneous and completely free form.”[30]

Some of the earliest San Francisco hippies were former students at San Francisco State College[39] who became intrigued by the developing psychedelic hippie music scene.[30] These students joined the bands they loved, living communally in the large, inexpensive Victorian apartments in the Haight-Ashbury.[40] Young Americans around the country began moving to San Francisco, and by June 1966, around 15,000 hippies had moved into the Haight.[41] The Charlatans, Jefferson Airplane, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Grateful Dead all moved to San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood during this period. Activity centered around the Diggers, a guerrilla street theatre group that combined spontaneous street theatre, anarchistic action, and art happenings in their agenda to create a “free city”. By late 1966, the Diggers opened free stores which simply gave away their stock, provided free food, distributed free drugs, gave away money, organized free music concerts, and performed works of political art.[42]

On October 6, 1966, the state of California declared LSD a controlled substance, which made the drug illegal.[43]
