Stratfor, once hacked by Anonymous (Download the Project PM archive tar.gz 18.9mb and Free Barrett Brown!) for it’s involvement in US domestic spying, hints at a weakened Ergodan and perhaps a collapsed Turkish government:
The rapid escalation of anti-government protests in Turkey in recent days has exposed a number of long-dormant fault lines in the country’s complex political landscape. But even as the appeal of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (also known by its Turkish acronym, AKP) is beginning to erode, it will remain a powerful force in Turkish politics for some time to come, with its still-significant base of support throughout the country and the lack of a credible political alternative in the next elections.|||

The protests so far do not indicate that Erdogan’s party is at serious or imminent risk of losing its grip on power, but they do reveal limits to the prime minister’s political ambitions. Erdogan is attempting to extract votes from a slow-moving and highly fragile peace process with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party to help him get enough support for a constitutional referendum. The referendum would transform Turkey from a parliamentary system to a presidential system and thus enable Erdogan, whose term as prime minister expires in 2015, to continue leading Turkey as president beyond 2014, when presidential elections are scheduled. The sight of protesters from the pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (known as the BDP) joining Republican People’s Party supporters for the June 1 protests does not bode well for Erdogan’s plan to rely on those votes in the constitutional referendum…[In Full @ Stratfor, “Turkey’s Violent Protests in Context” ]

♫♫ Doing The Turkey Tango ♫♫Tango down: Anonymous hits Turkey, takes government websites offlineIn solidarity with the people of Turkey, Anonymous hacktivists take down numerous Turkish government websites, including the website of President Abdullah Gul and the website of the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The action, dubbed “Operation Turkey” (#OpTurkey), began Sunday, June 2, in response to the police brutality against activists protesting the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park in Istanbul.

Media reports indicate that the website of President Abdullah Gul has been taken offline, along with the website of the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), the websites for the Istanbul Directorate of Security, the Istanbul Governor’s Office and other government websites.

In addition to disabling government websites, Anonymous is also tweeting passwords to free access to a VPN, a virtual private network that connects computers and devices in one network, allowing protesters in Turkey to communicate with the outside world.[In Full with links @ The Examiner]

Two media collage/music mixes about the cyberwar attacks of the online activist group Anonymous in response to the shutdown and arrests of megaupload by U.S. Dept of Justice that took place a day after sites like Wikipedia went black protesting the Stop Online Piracy Act and similar laws further restricting the internet. Anonymous took responsibility for a series of network attacks on January 19th 2012 on government and entertainment industry websites, after US officials shutdown of Megaupload, com and arrests of seven people across the globe on charges of distributing illegal copies of movies, music, and electronic books. Some sites experienced service disruptions; the Justice Department, Universal Music Group and BMI, which collects copyright royalties for composers, were knocked offline. The US Copyright Office and the Recording Industry Association of America sites were also attacked.

Anonymous launches Operation Guantanamo: #OpGTMO engaged in support of the hunger strikers! On Friday, May 17, the international hacktivist collective known as Anonymous, joined by Code Pink and other political action groups from the U.S. and the U.K., launched Operation Guantanamo to mark the 100th day of a hunger strike within the Guantanamo Bay prison camp.
The three day campaign of global action is intended to raise awareness of the human rights violations currently going on at Guantanamo Bay prison camp via social media and on the ground protests. Alleged violations at Guantanamo include the indefinite detention of prisoners, many (ed. Not ‘many’, ALL. There ARE NO POWs or ‘Terrorists’ there anymore -RR) of whom have been cleared for release years ago.

Don’t just complain when the defendant (Swartz) happens to be a brilliant guy who went to Stanford and hangs out with Larry Lessig. Instead, complain that this is business as usual in federal criminal cases around the country — mostly with defendants who no one has ever heard of and who get locked up for years without anyone else much caring…” ~~Orin Kerr, former federal prosecutor, DOJ computer crimes unit

“…the pending federal prosecution of 31-year-old Barrett Brown poses all new troubling risks. That’s because Brown - who has been imprisoned since September on a 17-count indictment that could result in many years in prison — is a serious journalist who has spent the last several years doggedly investigating the shadowy and highly secretive underworld of private intelligence and defense contractors, who work hand-in-hand with the agencies of the Surveillance and National Security State in all sorts of ways that remain completely unknown to the public (I’d say see the Project PM Wiki for extensive research about domestic spying contractors but as of this posting the site is down -RR). It is virtually impossible to conclude that the obscenely excessive prosecution he now faces is unrelated to that journalism and his related activism.” [In Full]

The tweet in question, included a picture of an email sent to a member of the Westboro Baptist Church whose account had been hacked by Anonymous and included the sender’s address. Here’s the offending tweet…

This tweet was still available once Twitter reinstated the account.

The tweet was part of Anonymous’s effort to harass members of the Westboro Baptist Church after the (disgusting) group announced it would stand outside Sandy Hook Elementary School to “sing praise to God for the glory of his work in executing his judgment.”
